In many ways, the OTR (Over-the-Road) or CDL driver is more of a lifestyle than it is work. They are mostly on the road almost 300 days a year and they restrict their time at home, which will affect their relationship with the family. 


There are several professions you need to talk to your loved ones about before you even think about applying for truck driver job. Driving is one of those jobs.
  
The morning is very early for truck drivers. Some truck drivers prefer to travel all night instead of working throughout the day. One reason for this is because sun heat is unbearable during the day so it is better to travel during the cooler evening.

  1. You may have to work up to 70 hours for eight days. After 70 hours, you can go alone after 34 hours. The 70-hour limit can be achieved by working 14 hours a day, but no more than 11 continuous hours. You must complete the "business hours" with a 10-hour break.
  2. Truck drivers may receive per hour wages, percentages, or payment calculated per mile.
  3. Trucking companies in Illinois that pays "practical miles" are paid for each mile they produce at work.
  4. You often do not know what you will get until the end of the year.
